My Dirty Little Secret
I’ll tell you a secret…I go at least 10 days without washing my hair! I’m sure you are thinking: “Sick! That’s disgusting! I would never do that!” I used to think the same thing, so I totally get it. But trust me! Once you get your hair to go that long you will get addicted to it. I literally cannot even remember the last time I washed my hair earlier than at least 12 days. No joke. I’ve been doing this for so long that it is just natural to me.

(Collage is the order I do my hair to go at least 10 days. It varies, but this is the gist…I’ll go into detail about it in my next post)
I used to wash my hair every couple of days up until my early college days. I never knew there was another way to do it, so like everyone else, I washed my hair at least every couple days, or my hair was a grease ball. But, once I hit college I started hating how much time and effort it was taking to do this; especially since I shared a bathroom with 3 other girls. So, I started making my hair go longer. Dry shampoo wasn’t invented yet, so I remember just trying to make it to 3 days without having to wash it. It was a grease ball for a bit doing this, but then my hair got used to it, and I was able to go a full 3 days without greasy hair.
I kept training my hair to go one-day longer until I got to 4 days, then I couldn’t go passed that. But then, something magical came on the market and it changed my life: dry shampoo! Once I got a hold of that stuff, it was all over. I was going a week easily at that point, and in the last couple years, I’ve been going 10-14 days minimum. It’s been awesome, and I’ll tell you why:
It’s healthier for your hair. Back in high school, my hairdresser would always tell me how dry my hair was, and how it was because I washed it so much. I didn’t like conditioner because it made my hair grease up faster, so I let it be dry and washed it more. By doing this, I wasn’t letting my hairs natural oils come in and repair my hair when I washed it. Now, every time I go to get my hair done, my stylist always comments on how this is the healthiest my hair has ever been! And not only that, my hair grows! It’s the longest it’s ever been on it’s own right now, and I feel like I owe it to not washing my hair constantly. Oh, and by not washing it as much, I don’t have to blow-dry as much (2-3 times monthly!!) so that saves lots of times heat could be on my hair.
It’s a time-saver. I don’t really have to go into much detail as to why it saves time…it’s pretty self-explanitory right? I don’t have to wash it (saves time), and I don’t have to dry it (saves time). I also have a system of hairstyles that I do in order to keep being able to go 10 days, so knowing how I’m going to do my hair makes it that much quicker to do! Only one of the hairstyles I do takes 30 minutes, the rest take 15 minutes.
It saves my color. Anyone who knows me knows I love to dye my hair. And when you have a color like mine (or dark brown), you know that with every wash comes fading. I can (and do) wash it in ice-cold water when I absolutely have to wash it, and even then, it looks like I’m bleeding to death because there is so much dye all over the shower floor. I can’t stand that! Not washing it completely helps save my color.
It makes traveling so much easier. I don’t know about you, but when we go on vacation, the last thing I want to do is get up an 1 1/2 hours before everyone to get ready so by the time everyone is ready to leave, I am too. Not gonna happen. I want to enjoy myself and sleep longer! Not washing my hair allows me to do that! Rarely do I have to wash my hair on a vacation (and when I do, it’s usually one when we are swimming). I plan ahead of the trip to wash it the day we leave so while we are there, I don’t have to worry about it.
Now that you know why I do it, in my next post, I’m going to divulge my routine on how I go the full 10 days, the products I use and love, and go into detail on why I do my hair that way that day and which products I use which days. Can’t wait for you to read it!
Have a fabulous weekend lovelies!
And ps, I promise I’m not disgusting. I shower every single day…I just use a shower cap. Yep, I’m a grandma.
